Engelbert Humperdinck honored

The writer of one of the world's best loved operas is to be commemorated with a new stamp by Deutsche Post. Engelbert Humperdinck will be featured on a new issue which is to be released on 9th September to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Born on 1st September, 1854 in the German town of Sieberg, Humperdinck spent much of his life teaching and conducting music, even tutoring the son of Richard Wagner. He is best remembered, however, for writing one of the most well-known children's stories - Hansel and Gretel.

Conceived as an opera, Hansel and Gretel premiered on 23rd December, 1893 and was an instant hit. It is still one of the world's most popular and best loved operas today. Humperdinck died at the age of 67 in Neustrelitz on 27th September, 1921.

The 46 x 27.32 mm stamps has been designed by Professor Ernst Junger und Lorli Junger and has a face value of 45c.
