Great Irish songs – four stamps introduced by An Post

Ireland is noted the world over for its unique cultural heritage, the greatest part of which is the country’s much-loved songs. Irish music is one of the ways of expressing the Irish people’s identity. On May 9, An Post will issue a set of stamps that celebrate four iconic and internationally recognized songs, performed by renowned Irish artistes. This special stamps release also highlights the power of the stamp to tell a story.

The songs featured are Danny Boy (John McCormack); On Raglan Road (Luke Kelly); With or Without You (U2) and Dreams (The Cranberries).

"Danny Boy" is a ballad set to an ancient Irish melody. It is most closely associated with Irish communities. "On Raglan Road" is a well-known Irish song from a poem written by Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh named after Raglan Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin. "With or Without You" is a song by Irish rock band U2. The song was the group's most successful single at the time, becoming their first number-one hit. And "Dreams" is a song by Irish rock band the Cranberries. It was released in 1992 as the band's debut single.
