Europa stamps, bearing the official logo, are issued every year by the members of PostEurop, the trade association which represents the interests of European public postal operators. EUROPA stamps are eagerly sought after by collectors around the world. Each year a theme for this great philatelic contest is different. This time the theme of National Birds has been selected for interpretation. Jersey Post has already designed and prepared for release a set of six Europa 2019 stamps featuring birds which can be sighted in Jersey.
Designed by Mark Wilkinson, the stamps explain the traditional symbolic meaning with which the chosen bird species are associated. The 50p stamp features a kestrel that is the smallest member of the falcon family. These birds are associated with vision and patience. The 65p stamp depicts a swallow - the bird that heralds the coming of spring. It is a symbol of hope, fertility and renewal. The next item with the face value of 76p features a swan that is associated with purity, loyalty, unity, and love. The 82p stamp depicts a peacock – a striking bird that represents both glory and dignity. The item with the face value of 94p shows a kingfisher – a symbol of peace and calm. And the last £1.12 stamp features a stork that represents new beginnings and commitment.
