The upcoming auction at Robert Siegel will showcase a variety of outstanding US stamps that previously belonged to the collection of Nelson Berman. The event is expected to attract philatelists from all over the world.
Nelson Berman started his collection in the 1970s. As a collector, he successfully amassed a full US stamp collection from the Classic Period (1847-1893). His hard work as well as dedication over many years resulted in creating a splendid assembly of rarities. On the 22nd of June, these valuables will be presented to the philatelists.
According to Linn's, the most anticipated lot featured will be a special 1875 Continental Bank Note Co. stamp with a bright blue 5-cent Zachary Taylor stamp (Scott #181). This lot features an intense and vivid color. If you take a look at the perforation, you may see that it had been previously cut out with scissors to separate the postmark from its original panel.
Experts from Siegel have confirmed that there are only ten surviving copies of this rarity. One is housed in the Miller collection, currently possessed by the New York Public Library. Therefore, collectors have just nine copies left to purchase. Berman was able to acquire this particular stamp from Robert Zellner's collection in October 1998. Scott's catalog estimates this stamp at $450,000.
Besides this stamp, sixteen other intriguing items from the collection will also be unveiled at the auction. Among them is a set of thirteen Colombian exhibition postmarks from 1893. Some of these stamps are in a perfect condition, adding to their desirability among collectors.
