Mayfair revealed the spectacular results of its September auction

Mayfair conducted its latest auction on September 29. It presented to collectors’ attention a great range of philatelic material with many Canadian, British, Chinese lots. Sales well in excess of £350,000 were realised with a strong 'book', lively room, plus on-line and telephone bidding. As usual boxes and mixed lots proved popular and the greatest results were achieved by the GB section.

Among the highlights were lot 607, Rainbow Colour Trial from state 3d in dark olive green realising £1680, lot 669 a mint £5 orange £3240 and 674, the 2 1/2d pl 2 on blued paper mint, £2160. A very rare unissued £5 Die Proof was eventually sold on the telephone for £10,800. Lot 815, 1915 DLR 5/- Seahorse u/m with inverted watermark realised £3600 and perhaps the rarest GB booklet, the 1948 1/- SG BD6 fetched £6600.

The star of Canadian section was lot 912, the 1851 12d Die proof in vermilion, which made £2280. High prices were achieved for the 1922 KUT mint high values overprinted Specimen, with the £50 and £100 each fetching £2160. Meanwhile, the continued strength of the market for China was borne out with £2760 paid for lot 965, the 1968 Mao Directives strip.

Mayfair’s next auction will be the November postal. It is now live and will close on November 7. This sale that promises to be ‘one to watch’ for collectors offers 6000 lots and 0% buyer’s premium.
