New stamps dedicated to the Irish Defence Forces

On September 12, 2013, An Post issued four stamps in recognition of the Irish Defence Forces, which has occupied a unique position in Irish society since its foundation.

The Irish Defence Forces traces its origins to the Irish Volunteers, which was founded in 1913. Following one of the most turbulent periods in Irish history, the Executive Council of the new Irish State provided a statutory basis for the standing army under the Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1923. This Act took effect on October 1, 1924.

Throughout its history the Defence Forces has proudly defended the nation against the backdrop of a variety of security challenges. It has protected the State and its citizens by supporting An Garda Siochana in securing vital State installations and economic interests, and has supported the community by assisting government agencies in providing crisis relief or maintaining essential services for citizens. It continues to fulfill these roles and contributes to international peace and security with a noted tradition of supporting overseas peacekeeping and humanitarian missions since 1958.

Designed by Zinc Design Consultants, the stamps symbolize the continued commitment of the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps to defend, protect and support the interests of the people of Ireland, at home and overseas.
