New Swiss stamps: The Smurfs

New Swiss stamps: The Smurfs

The Smurfs are depicted on new stamps by Swiss Post.

"Can't you look where you're smurfing?" These were the words that catapulted the Smurfs onto the public stage. Peyo, the Belgian comics artist whose real name was Pierre Culliford, invented the Smurfs by chance in 1958. When he asked for the "smurf" instead of the salt at dinner and a colleague said he'd smurf it to him, the Smurf language was born. The blue look was quickly drawn in, and the little gnomes then made a guest appearance in the "Spirou" comic magazine in the "Johan and Peewit" series where they went down so well that the Smurfs were soon starring in their own stories.
