This January, Kelleher Auctions are having their premier event, with many stamps from the USA, Britain, as well as some other countries. The auction will start with the two Penny Black stamps which are very popular among all the philatelists worldwide. All in all, there will be more than 1,200 lots offered.
One of the most notable stamp errors in the US stamps is an unused 1901 1¢ Pan-American Exposition showcasing a steam vessel upside down. It has an inverted vignette that had previously been fastened with its original gum (Scott #294a). This lot is going to be one of the most anticipated at the event.
The experts comment on this stamp: "Very fresh and sound, free from the usual bends, tears, and faults typically associated with this issue — and excellent centering which is a rarity in this case".
The Philatelic Foundation's 1990 expert certificate attests to this mistake stamp's flawless condition and declares it to be authentic. The opening bid is $5,000 for this lot, and some specialists expect it will fetch between $10,000 and $15,000 at auction.
