San Clemente Anniversary Stamp

An Post issues a 55c stamp on 12 September to celebrate the 150th anniversary of archaeological discoveries made at San Clemente Basilica, Rome by Irish Dominican Priest, Fr. Joseph Mullooly, who was born in Lanesboro, Co. Longford in 1812.

In 1840, at the age of 28, he travelled to Italy, joining the Dominican Order the following year. Having been assigned to the Basilica di San Clemente, during 1857 he began excavations under the existing basilica.
