The Nude in Art: Olympia stamp from Monaco

The Post of Monaco has issued a stamp featuring the famous painting by Edouard Manet "Olympia". Painted by Manet in 1863, Olympia was inspired by Titian's Venus of Urbino but deviates from the academic canon in its style.

At the time, Olympia shocked in many ways: both the provocative attitude of the woman and the realism of the subject engendered controversy. In painting reality as he saw it, Manet created what some consider the first modern painting. In that way, Manet was a pivotal figure in the transition from realism to impressionism.
