Tom Poes and Olivier B. Bommel as the brightest Dutch comic books characters. Two original silver stamps released by PostNL

March 28th, 2016 hurries to inform readers that PostNL has commemorated the 75th anniversary of comic book heroes Tom Poes and Oliver B. Bommel with two real silver stamps.

Comic book author, Marten Toonder’s two comic strip heroes are depicted in a colourful and recognisable way on the silver stamps.

"Tom Poes" was a funny animal comic, published in text comics format. The main protagonists are Tom Poes, a white anthropomorphic cat, and his best friend, lord Oliver B. Bumble (Olivier B. Bommel in Dutch). Because of Bommel's popularity among readers the series is sometimes referred to as the Bommelsaga as well. Toonder received many awards and honorary distinctions for both his illustrations and literary output. In the Netherlands Tom Poes is regarded as literature.

Oliver B. Bumble (Olivier B. Bommel in Dutch language) is a fictional anthropomorphic bear and one of the two main characters, the other being Tom Puss (Tom Poes in Dutch) in an originally Dutch series of comic books bearing the name of either one main characters in their name, written by Marten Toonder.

Sir Olivier Berendinus Bommel is a gentleman of good standing, for whom money is no object and Lord of Castle Bommelstein. Sir Bumble is very class-conscious, but not unlikable. He drives a modest car, de "Oude Schicht" (the Old Flash), en dresses very modest in no more than a checkered coat.

PostNL used a special printing technique for these stamps; a technique that is seldom used today. This accentuates Tom Poes, the small white cat, and the pipe-smoking Mr Bommel's chequered jacket. The stamps were manufactured by the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht.
