Two threatened species featured on Greenland’s spectacular EUROPA 2021 stamps!

The 2021 common theme for the EUROPA stamps is Endangered National Wildlife, and although much of Greenlandic wildlife prospers because of the huge areas with limited human interaction, some species are in danger of extinction. The stamps introduced by Greenland Post show such threatened species as the Greenland White-fronted Goose, and the Harbour Seal.

The Greenland White-fronted Goose can be recognized by its orange legs and the white blaze on its orange beak. These birds spend spring and summer in Western Greenland, where they also breed. However, the birds fly to Ireland and remain there during autumn and winter. The population of Greenland White-fronted Geese is in decline. In the stamp, three geese are depicted in flight.

The second stamp features three Harbour Seals in the water. The Harbour Seal is a natural predator with a short snout and can be recognized by its curved line that goes from the forehead to the snout. The Harbour Seal is seen in Greenland very rarely, as they primarily abide around Cape Farewell. They usually live near the coast, where they gather on land over the summer to molt.
