U.S. Postal Service issues new Alaska stamp

The U.S. Postal Service unveiled a new stamp in Fairbanks Wednesday to commemorate Alaska's 50 years of statehood.

The new stamp features veteran sled dog racer Dee Dee Jonrowe during the Iditarod. Official Iditarod photographer Jeff Schultz took the picture.

The stamp won't be released until January, just in time for the big celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of Alaska joining the union.

"It will probably be around the time of the governor's ball on Jan. 2nd or Jan. 3, and we're hoping to have past governors and the present governor available at the event," said Darus Macy of the U.S. Postal Service.
