Woodcarving – traditional Russian craft

Woodcarving – traditional Russian craft

FindYourStampsValue.com would like to introduce two new postage stamps designed by Russian Post. These items are dedicated to woodcarving crafts. The stamps are scheduled to be released and put into circulation on the 28th of November.

Woodcarving has been a preoccupation for Russia handicraftsmen since times immemorial. The materials used have primarily been birch and pine wood which is found in abundant supply in Russia. Everyday items such as utensils and various domestic appliances are carved to resemble common animals or objects in the environment.

The primary tools used by artisans are a hatchet, a special knife with a short curved blade and a wooden handle, and a set of round cutters of different sizes. A wooden blank is first cut to size with a hatchet and the remaining work is completed mostly with the knife. Woodcarving has its map. The village of Bogorodskoe is famous for carved wooden toys.
