Eastern Auctions is to conduct its next sale on November 15-16. It will offer to collectors’ attention a tremendous selection of British North America & Canada stamps, many of which widely regarded by advanced philatelists as some of the very best examples extant. One of the most remarkable lots that will be presented at this auction is 1851 12p Black on handmade laid paper. It is offered with a starting price of $37,500.
1851 12d black Canada stamp is one of the rarest examples of Canada’s first classic stamps. The item shows the portrait of the young Queen Victoria. For the stamp image, the Queen's portrait by Alfred Edward Chalon (1780–1860) was used. This design is called the Chalon head. The stamps were printed in New York.
The specimen that is presented during this sale is in absolutely flawless quality, surrounded by four large margins and possessing true, deep colour on pristine paper displaying prominently visible laid lines, cancelled by two sharp, well-defined concentric rings cancellations in black. The stellar condition of this stamp is superior to almost all of the few existing used singles, most of which have imperfections and / or small margins. This is a visually striking and superb example of Canada's most coveted classic stamp.
