USA: Stamps with Famous Women

This article looks at the great contributions of well-known women in the United States, shown through stamp design. These women, from trailblazers to cultural icons, have made a great impact on American and international society and thus are commemorated on postmarks. Each stamp shares an amazing story, showcasing the achievements and challenges of women.

1. Isabella I of Castile stamp (1893) 

Isabella I of Castile $4 stamp (1893) Famous US women on stamps
This stamp honors Isabella I of Castile. She helped unite Spain and start the Age of Exploration. Isabella I of Castile funded Christopher Columbus's trips, which helped the Spanish Empire grow. She also created new trade routes through the Atlantic Ocean. The stamp shows her strength as a queen in a time when men held most power, and it captures her royal beauty.

This woman is shown next to Columbus on Isabella and Columbus $4 stamp (Scott #244). Isabelle was the first US woman to appear on a stamp. This stamp is a part of the Colombian Exposition Issue stamp series.

2. Martha Washington stamps (1902, 1923, 1938)

In 1902, the US Postal Service released the first Martha Washington 8c stamp showcasing the first First Lady of the country (Scott #306). Martha had always supported her husband, George Washington, helping him in hard times. In 1923, USPS released a new Martha Washington 4с stamp on a yellow brown background (Scott #556).

In 1938, another Martha Washington stamp of 1.5 cents appeared with her portrait in profile (Scott #805). Together, these stamps show how Martha Washington had a lasting impact on the country.

3. Pocahontas stamp (1907)

Pocahontas was a well-known Native American from the tribe of Powhatans. This woman assisted the English settlers along with her people to communicate and trade. When the colonists took her captive, 150 armed settlers asked for a ransom. This led to a violent conflict that destroyed towns and caused many Native American men to lose their lives.

Pocahontas made a great impact on the communication of Native Americans and people from other countries. The Pocahontas 5c stamp depicts her portrait on a blue background (Scott #330). This stamp is a part of the Jamestown Exposition Issue stamp series.

4. Molly Pitcher stamp (1928)

Molly Pitcher was a notable figure during the American Revolutionary War, recognized for her bravery and contributions on the battlefield. She is famously known for taking her husband's place at a cannon during the Battle of Monmouth after he was wounded, earning her the nickname "Molly Pitcher." In 1928, the US Postal Service released George Washighton, Battle of Monmouth 2c stamp with "MOLLY / PITCHER" printed on it (Scott #646).

They refused to make a separate item to commemorate her, thus, after long negotiations, the board members of Post finally agreed to make a special print on existing stamps. It was done upon the request of American stamp collectors.

5. Susan B. Anthony stamps (1936, 1955)

6. Virginia Dare stamp (1937)

In 1937, the USPS created Virginia Dare 5с stamp celebrating the 350th birthday of Virginia Dare (Scott #796). She was the first English child born in America in 1587. The stamp displayed her picture, showing the spirit of early exploration of America as well as its settlement.

7. Louisa May Alcott stamp (1940)

Louisa May Alcott wrote the well-known book "Little Women", which came out in 1868. This woman faced many personal struggles, like fighting for independence and supporting women's rights. These were the two long-going  motives often shown in her works. Alcott's writing inspired many readers over the generations.

8. Frances Willard stamp (1940)

This is a well-known American writer, teacher, and social activist. She led the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) from 1879 until she died in 1898. Willard believed that improving education, promoting temperance (avoiding alcohol), and supporting women's rights would help society grow.

In 1931, Addams became a Nobel Peace Prize winner for her amazing work in social justice, labor reform along with women's rights promotion. 10. Clara Barton stamps (1948, 1995)

Clara Barton was the founder of the American Red Cross. She also worked as a teacher, raised children and helped at the hospital as a nurse. This woman showed tireless efforts to help people get through the hard times of crisis, wars and natural disasters. 11. Juliette Gordon Low stamp (1948)

12. Moina Michael stamp (1948)

16. Eleanor Roosevelt stamps (1963, 1984, 1998)

A commemorative stamp, part of a series honoring prominent American women, immortalized this trailblazer's contributions. In 1963, the USPS released the first Eleanor Roosevelt 5с stamp with her portrait performed in purple shades (Scott #1236). Her tireless advocacy for social justice and human rights was further recognized in 1984 with the second Eleanor Roosevelt stamp of 20c bearing her likeness (Scott #2105).

Then, in 1998, a century after her birthday, another stamp paid tribute to her enduring legacy as a champion of equality and a dedicated humanitarian (Scott #3185d). 

17. Mary Cassatt stamps (1966, 1998)

22. Elizabeth Blackwell (1973)

Elizabeth made significant contributions to improve healthcare for women and children which cannot go unnoticed. Blackwell faced many challenges and discrimination during her education and career, but she kept pushing forward, making it easier for future female doctors.

23. Sybil Ludington stamp (1975)
