Champion golfer to feature on six Jersey stamps!

Jersey Post issued a set of six stamps to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Jersey golfer, Harry Vardon. One of golf’s greatest ever players, Vardon won The Open a record six times from 1896 to 1914, and the US Open in 1900. He pioneered accurate and reliable hitting techniques that are still the basis of the modern golf swing. The stamps introduced by Jersey Post feature photographs of Harry Vardon throughout his career.

On May 9th, 1870 Harry Vardon was born in Jersey. He became one of golf’s most popular figures after Young Tom Morris and influenced the game well beyond his playing years. Natural talent, mental strength, and technical skill, help Harry win 62 tournaments during his career. The golfer popularized the overlapping grip, a technique that became known as the Vardon Grip and is used by many sportsmen to this day.

Chris Elligott, Jersey Post’s Philatelic Design and Production Manager explains: “Jersey is rightfully very proud of Vardon, whose record ranks him amongst the greatest golfers of all time. One of only four golfers from The British Isles to have won both The Open and the US Open, Vardon features on the Miniature Sheet together with one of the others to achieve the same feat, fellow Jerseyman and dual Open winner Ted Ray. This year also commemorates 100 years since Ted Ray’s US Open win.”
