9. Anzac Day 2024: Picturing War Stamp Series

Anzac picturing war - Australia postage stamps 2024

Australia has come to understand the significance of preserving the inspiring stories of the armed forces since the terrible days of World War I. Photographers have made just as much of an impact as official artists, depicting the courage and sacrifice of Australian troops.

Three of Australia's official war photographers can be recognized on this stamp series for their valiant exploration of dangerous areas. These postal items pay a heartfelt tribute to those who valiantly captured the lives of men and women in uniform. This is a wonderful way for Australians to remember the immense impact of war on their country's history.

10. Christmas Island Airport: 50 Years Stamp Series

Christmas Island Airport: 50 Years - Australia postage stamps 2024

Before the 1970s, Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean had no aviation infrastructure. The boats were the only mode of transportation there. However, after a lot of years of preparation, in summer 1974, they opened an airport in the northern section of the island. It had a runway that was 2,100 meters long and a terminal for passengers.

The first touchdown of the airplane happened on June 6, 1974. This event started a new era in the aviation industry on the island. Later on, Ansett Airlines started to provide the only direct flights from Christmas Island to Australia.

11. Marine Emblems Stamp Series

Marine Emblems - Australia postage stamps 2024

This stamp shows pictures of sea animals from three states in Australia. There are special sea creatures like Leafy Seadragons that only live in the western and southern coastal waters of Australia. The Eastern Blue Groper, a type of big fish, has been the official emblem of New South Wales since 1998. It can grow up to one meter long and is usually found in reefs and rivers from southern Queensland to southern Victoria. In 2005, the Barrier Reef Anemonefish was chosen as the marine symbol of Queensland.

This fish lives near sea anemones in the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef. The tentacles of the sea anemone protect the fish from enemies, so they can live together peacefully. This fish is easy to spot because it is orange with a white tail and two white bars on its head and body. Its average length is about 12 cm.

12. Petrels Stamp Series

Petrels Australia postage stamps 2024

Only a small part of Antarctica, about 1% to 2%, doesn't have ice all the time. This area is usually near the coast. Penguins like to make babies in these ice-free spots. Sometimes, tall mountain peaks called nunataks stick out from the ice. These spots are used by flying birds called Antarctic petrels for making nests. In the short Antarctic summer, these birds have babies by laying eggs in shallow holes in the ground. After the babies grow up, they and their parents fly away.

Some of these birds even travel all the way to southern Australia for the winter before coming back to Antarctica to have babies again.
