MOST VALUABLE DUTCH STAMPS
The first Dutch stamps were introduced in January 1852. The country’s name did not appear on the postage issues of the Netherlands until 1864. Before then, all the stamps were inscribed with only "POST ZEGEL" and the denomination. The philatelic items created by Netherlands are attractive and well-designed. However, there are few truly rare Netherlands stamps. Even those that are hard to come by don't fetch the high prices like the world’s leading philatelic rarities. Though the majority of Dutch stamps are not very scarce, there are some truly rare plate and color varieties, errors, gutter pairs, proofs, specimens, postal history, postmarks, etc. So here is the list of ten rarest Dutch stamps, which are sought after by collectors.

15c on 17½c ultramarine & brown stamp, 1924
1924 15c on 17½c ultramarine & brown, perf 11½x11, is one of the rarest Netherlands stamps. This is a vertical-format stamp that features the left-facing portrait of the young Queen Wilhelmina. She was Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 until her abdication in 1948. Wilhelmina became queen when her father died, when she was 10 years old. As she was still a minor, her mother served as regent until she turned 18 years old. One of the finest, if not the finest, surviving examples of 15c on 17½c ultramarine & brown stamp was sold by Daniel F. Keller Auctions in July, 2016. The stamp in an extremely fine condition, featuring bright, fresh colours fetched $4,750.

25c King William III stamp, 1867
King William III stamp is one of the six new higher-denomination Netherlands issued 1867. This is the first stamp that was inscribed with the country name. It is engraved on white, unwatermarked paper. William III was King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1849 until his death in 1890. He was also the Duke of Limburg from 1849 until the abolition of the duchy in 1866. William was the son of King William II and Anna Pavlovna of Russia. On the abdication of his grandfather William I in 1840, he became the Prince of Orange. On the death of his father in 1849, he succeeded as king of the Netherlands. 25c King William III stamp was sold for $3,603 at Corinphila Veilingen in March, 2019.

1c lilac telegraph stamp with inverted value, 1903
1c lilac telegraph stamp with inverted value is actually a forgery, but it is quite expensive nowadays. The middle of the stamp was cut out and then very competently replaced upside-down. Since the existence of this stamp was known it has long been regarded as genuine (in the most recent Yvert catalogue it is still priced at €40,000!), but when it was presented to the expert committee of the NVPH in 1993 the fake was exposed. The stamp appeared for the first time in the 4th Ferrary auction in June 1922 in Paris, and appeared again in 1993 in a Dutch auction. In October 2010 the stamp was sold for $3,168 at Corinphila auction. This is one of the most appealing philatelic forgeries of the Netherlands.

7 1/2c dark violet stamp, 1927
In 1927 Netherlands Post issued 7½c violet denomination stamp, featuring syncopated perforation Type D. This is one of the rarest of all Netherlands issues. Other than the occasional appearance in one of the major auctions, it is very difficult to obtain! It is also one of the most challenging stamps in all of Netherlands. A wonderfully well centered, very fine, the rarest of the syncopated perf varieties of 1927 7½c violet denomination stamp was sold at H.R. Harmer auction in May, 2014. Signed Koopman, this extremely rare and very desirable stamp managed to fetch $3,000.

10c dark carmine stamp, 1852
10c dark carmine is one of the first Netherlands stamps that were originally released on January 1, 1852. This is very interesting Dutch stamp, which was finely engraved on white paper having a post horn watermark. The 10 C. denomination stamp was printed from ten different plates between 1852 and 1862, resulting in many different shades. 1852 10c dark carmine, plate 1A ("ghost" plate"), was sold for $2,900 at Hammer auction that took place in May, 2014. With only 160 examples known, the lot featured full balanced margins, rich characteristic color, and Rotterdam cancel.

10g Independence Centenary stamp, 1913
10g Independence Centenary stamp was issued to celebrate the centenary of Dutch independence. In 1813 the Netherlands gained its independence, and Prince Willem Frederik, son of the last stadholder Willem V, returned from exile and was proclaimed sovereign prince. The first constitution of the Netherlands as a monarchy dates from 1814. The stamp issued to celebrate the centenary of the Netherlands independence features Queen Wilhelmina. Never hinged and post office fresh example of this rare item appeared at Cherrystone auction that took place in November, 2005. The lot in mostly very fine condition was sold for $2,300.

7 1/2 g Marine Insurance stamp, 1921
In 1921, the Netherlands, and its main colony, the Netherlands Indies, both issued Marine Insurance stamps. These items were used to pay for a very unusual type of insured mail and were released in connection with a special service known as the DRIJVENDE BRANDKAST (floating safe). The safes were buoyant and were equipped with flares and bells. In the event that the ship sank, the safe would float off and the flares and bells would activate, hopefully leading to the recovery of the safe and its contents. Only 5,216 of the Netherlands set were issued. A pair of 7½g Marine Insurance stamps was sold by Harmer-Schau Auctions in January, 2008. The lot in a very fine condition realized $1,898.

2 1/2 g Princess Wilhelmina stamp, 1891
Upon William III’s death in 1890, Princess Wilhelmina, still a minor, became Queen of the Netherlands. As a result a great range of beautiful stamp issues appeared. One of them was 2½g Princess Wilhelmina stamp made in red and blue colour. The design of this remarkable philatelic item features the likeness of the young Wilhelmina with long flowing hair. These stamps are referred to by philatelists as the "Princess Wilhelmina Issue". The item is engraved on unwatermarked paper, and is perforated 11 ½. One of the finest examples of 2½g Princess Wilhelmina stamp was sold by Corinphila Veilingen in March, 2019. The lot fetched $1,471.

10g orange Queen Wilhelmina stamp, 1905
10g orange Queen Wilhelmina stamp is one of twenty-seven major-type definitive Netherlands stamps that were issued between 1899 and 1924. It features the left-facing portrait of the young Queen Wilhelmina who ruled the Netherlands from 1890 until her abdication in 1948. She reigned as Queen for fifty-eight years, longer than any other Dutch monarch. 10g orange Queen Wilhelmina stamp, in never hinged and fresh condition, with slight overall toning, was auctioned by Cherrystone in November, 2005. This scarce unhinged variety managed to fetch $1,450.

25c lilac & black telegraph stamp, 1903
25c lilac & black telegraph stamp is a truly extraordinary example of Netherlands telegraph stamps. These items were intended solely for the prepayment of telegraph fees. The customer completed a telegraph form before handing it with payment to the clerk who applied a telegraph stamp and cancelled it to show that payment had been made. If the stamp was an imprinted stamp, it formed part of the message form. Netherlands telegraph issues have a hexagonal shape and were used both internally and sold to the public. 25c lilac & black stamp in a very fine condition was offered by Daniel F. Kelleher Auctions in July, 2016. The lot, featuring the original gum, never hinged, fresh and well centered, was sold for $1,300.
