“On Our Own Land” film honored with a special stamp by Slovenia Post

“On Our Own Land” film honored with a special stamp by Slovenia Post

On 21 November 1948 the first Slovene post-war feature-length film On Our Own Land (Na svoji zemlji) had its premiere. This date stands as the symbolic date of the last act of the birth of Slovene professional filmmaking. To mark this event Slovenia Post has released a special stamp depicting one of the most memorable scenes from the film. The stamp made in black and white colours will be especially interesting for collectors who are into vintage stamps.

“On Our Own Land” is a fully professional production and, as critics enthusiastically noted at the time, an "art" film. It is a "partisan film", both by its genre and for the fact that it was made by former partisans. “On Our Own Land” is also a Slovenian first authentic full-length feature film. The story is set in the western (Littoral) district of Slovenia, during the last two years of the liberation struggle. The film is on the one hand a war film about the partisan struggle, and on the other, a film which speaks of the village and the villagers who were practically all supporters of the liberation struggle. “On Our Own Land” featured peasants in original roles and well-known stage actors from Ljubljana making their first appearances in a national film production.
