1861 Woodblock 1d vermilion mint block of four fetched $166,201 at David Feldman!

David Feldman conducted Spring Auction Series 2021 on June 14-19. During this sale over 5,600 lots were offered with the impressive sections including Austria, Belgium, China, and Japan with foreign P.O.’s, Egypt, France, and French colonies, Latin America with significant Brazil and Uruguay, Persia, Russia, as well as Great Britain and the British Empire.

The most outstanding lot that appeared at this sale was the 1861 Woodblock 1d vermilion mint block of four that is considered as one of the most significant and valuable items in South Africa philately. The auction house described this lot as featuring “virtually full original gum, one side just cut into, some creases and minor toning, lovely fresh colour, a stunning multiple and a unique mint block”.  You won’t find this block in some of the most important collections of Cape as it appears on the market rarely. This time 1861 Woodblock 1d vermilion mint block of four managed to achieve GBP 120’000 or roughly $166,201.
