400 Years of Manneken Pis – a special stamp released by Belgium Post

400 Years of Manneken Pis – a special stamp released by Belgium Post

For the last 400 years, Brussels has had Manneken Pis, a two-foot-high sculpture of a naked little boy, urinating into a fountain. The original of the current bronze statuette was made by Hieronymus Duquesnoy the Elder, and this happened in 1619. Manneken Pis therefore celebrates its 400th anniversary this year. Belgium Post has presented a special stamp to mark this event. Illustrated by Philip Vermeesen, the item features a drawn version of Manneken Pis.

Mannequin Pis is one of the most recognized, and visited attractions in all of Brussels. The intersection where Manneken Pis is situated is always crowded with tourists trying to capture the perfect shot of the Great Symbol of Brussels. Shops in the area sell everything from life-size duplicates of the statue to smaller replicas made of Belgian chocolate. Manneken is also famous for his wardrobe changes, which happen throughout the year. His two-foot-tall frame is often dressed like Mozart, Nelson Mandela, and even a Russian cosmonaut.
