Kyrgyz Express Post introduced to collectors’ attention a special postage stamp: “Bird of the Year (III). The Bearded Vulture”. This bird species is listed in the Kyrgyz Republic Red Data Book. Scientists cannot assert the exact number of representatives who still live in Kyrgystan.
The Bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) is a large bird of prey that has a recognizable appearance: a bunch of black feathers under its beak, which resembles a beard. This bird belongs to the family Accipitridae. In Kyrgystan this bird species found shelter in rocky and mountainous areas, at the height of 2,000 to 4,500 m above sea level. This is the only bird of prey that lives at such a height. Bearded vultures help maintain the ecological balance of nature, as they serve a natural sanitation service feeding mainly on the dead animals.
