San Marino Post devotes two Europa stamps to endangered species!

San Marino Post released two stamps within the “Europa 2021 – Endangered National Wildlife” philatelic series. The first item features the Geotritone (European cave salamanders), a small amphibian that abodes in the rocks of Monte Titano. The second stamp shows the River Crab (Freshwater Crab), a crustacean extremely localized in small watercourses of San Marino. The author of the issue is Mauro Mazzara.

European cave salamanders live in mountainous regions of Italy, to be precise along the northern and central Apennine chain.  These salamanders have no lungs and need an environment of relatively low temperature and high moisture to feel comfortable. They feed on small crustaceans such as small shrimps, snails, and occasionally insects. The majority of crab species live in the ocean, in saltwater. However, many of them have adapted to living in freshwater, such as lakes and rivers. These are river or freshwater crabs that belong to a class of animals called crustaceans.
