2. Marie Joseph Angélique (Release: January 25, 2025)

Canada, Marie Joseph Angélique stamp 2025
Marie Joseph Angélique (circa 1705–1734) was an enslaved Black woman in Montréal who was accused of setting a fire that destroyed much of the city’s merchant quarter in 1734. Although her conviction was based mostly on hearsay, she was arrested, sentenced to death, tortured into confessing, and publicly executed. Historians continue to debate her guilt, but her story has become a powerful symbol of Black resistance to enslavement in Canada.

A commemorative design features a portrait of Angélique with a defiant gaze, set against the backdrop of a burning city. Since no known portraits of her exist, artist Alexis Eke created the image based on a photograph of actress Penande Estime, incorporating historical insights into her clothing, pose, and expression.

3. Peonies stamp series (Release: March 3, 2025)

Canada, Peonies stamp series 2025
This year’s Flower series from Canada Post features two elegant peonies, ‘Cytherea’ and ‘Marie-Victorin,’ on a strip of 10 stamps. Both hybrids were developed by Canadian-born horticulturists and are well suited to parts of Canada’s climate. Peonies, known for their large, fragrant blooms, have been cultivated for over 4,000 years, with many modern varieties tracing their origins to China.

‘Cytherea,’ a cherry rose semi-double peony, was registered in 1953 by Arthur Percy Saunders, while ‘Marie-Victorin,’ a pale pink, globe-shaped bloom, was first propagated in 2004 and named after the founder of the Montréal Botanical Garden. The Flower series has been a popular choice for wedding stationery and gardening enthusiasts since its launch in 2007.

4. Eid Praying Carpet stamp (Release: March 10, 2025)

Canada, Eid Praying Carpet stamp 2025
Eid al-Fitr, known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting observed from sunrise to sunset. In 2025, it will take place in March. Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, occurs at the end of the Hajj pilgrimage and commemorates the prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.

Observed in June 2025, it is also called Eid al-Kabir, meaning the Greater Eid. Both festivals emphasize key Islamic values such as charity, community, and gratitude, expressed through prayers, feasts, gift-giving, and helping those in need.
