
Guernsey Post joined other European postal operators and released eight special “Europa 2021 – Endangered National Wildlife” stamps depicting the protected species found in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Created by Guernsey-born artist Wendy Bramall, this stunning set of stamps show both critically endangered and near threatened animals.
The first stamp shows the European herring gull that is listed as Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The second item features the scaly cricket that is one of the rarest species of cricket and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
The third stamp is devoted to basking sharks that are considered to be the world’s second-largest fish. This species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is now protected in EU waters and under some international agreements. The fourth stamp features once common European eel that is now classed as Critically Endangered.
The fifth item depicts Near Threatened Black-backed meadow ant can be found in the British Isles. The sixth stamp shows a Harbour porpoise that is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The next value is devoted to the Glanville fritillary butterfly that is disappearing at an alarming rate. And the last stamp shows the Porbeagle shark, distant relatives of the great white shark, that are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
