Siegel auctioned Jenny Invert Position 77 for $800,000!

Siegel conducted “Inverted Jenny Position 77 and William T. Robey Letters” sale on the 31st Match that had impressive results. The starring lot in this auction was 24c Carmine Rose & Blue, Center Inverted, Position 77 in an extremely fine condition, a phenomenal mint never-hinged example of the famous 1918 24-cent Inverted “Jenny” error. Featuring wide margins, graded VF-XF 85 by the philatelic foundation, the stamp fetched an impressive sum of $800,000.

The 1918 Twenty Four Cent Inverted Jenny is one of the most famous and desired rarities in all of philately. The stamp received this status once it was issued in May, 1918, when William T. Robey bought the entire error sheet of 100, just one day after the error was released. Then Robey sold the sheet for $15,000 to the famous philatelic dealer Eugene Klein. Afterward, all 100 specimens were sold to the well-known collector, Col. Edward H.R. Green for $20,000.00. He asked Klein to break up the sheet into singles and blocks for their further selling. Unfortunately, many specimens of this spectacular new error were poorly handled that is why many of them have flaws. The example sold at this sale is in perfect position, which is the reason for its expensiveness.
