Pioneer Arts V - stamps from Papua New Guinea

The PNG Post has issued new stamps in its traditional Pioneer Arts series. The stamps feature paintings by Guinean artist Philip Yobale (1978-2009).

The paintings of Philip Yobale were mostly based on the social themes regarding poverty and politics. He won the German Mission Art Advancement Award in 1999 and in 2000 his work titled "Spirit Dance" was secured by the National Gallery of Australia, in the Australasian Art Collection.

His finely detailed paintings were done with watercolor and ink on paper, inspired by contemporary myths and legends.

Unfortunately he passed away in 2009, otherwise it would be a privilege today to see his wonderful arts exhibited around the world. Most of his paintings were bought and are being exhibited by private collectors in PNG and overseas.
