Saar rarity is to fetch $285,000 at Schlegel auction

The Schlegel Auction House will offer to collectors' attention the second part of the amazing Peter Zgonc collection with many interesting and unique items in another special auction that will take place on the 8th February. The highlight of this interesting sale is a rare Saar 1920 20-mark brown King Ludwig III stamp used on piece. The stamp is one of the unique gems from the Saar and Southern Germany collections of Peter Zgonc as well as rarities from all over the world.

The stamp shows the portrait of Ludwig III of Bavaria, the last king of Bavaria and the Wittelsbach dynasty. It was originally issued for use in Bavaria (Bayern), the Bayern name is obliterated by an overprint of four horizontal lines, and the name “SARRE” is printed over the king’s portrait. According to the expert Axel Braun, there are only fifteen examples of the 20 Mark brown with overprint “Sarre” exist. Even more rare are cancelled items – only two pieces are known! The specimen offered by Schlegel is the most beautiful of both known copies on piece.

The auction house described this philatelic gem as follows: “the UNISSUED RARITY on paper with beautifully merging cancellation „ROHRBACH b. ST. INGBERT | 10. APR. 20 -5-6“ with fine perforation at all four sides stands in excellent fresh quality”.  Considered as one of the rarest German stamps Saar 1920 20-mark brown King Ludwig III stamp used on piece is offered with a starting price of 250,000 € (or roughly $285,000).

This is the unique chance to acquire one of only two known cancelled stamps and therefore a living legend of the German postal history!
