Due to the COVID pandemic, Mariehamn has not hosted Tall Ships Races this summer. Instead, a maritime folk festival with food, drink, sales, and entertainment is being held there on 22–25 July 2021. The stamp has the adventure, fellowship, and friendship among the sailing ship's crews in focus. The artist behind this spectacular issue is Juha Pykäläinen and the design was created by Sofia Valtersson/Strax.
The Tall Ships Races is a world-famous sporting event for windjammers and large sailboats. It is held in the Baltic Sea about every four years. The aim of this race, above all, is to induce young people to learn to sail and, at the same time, promote friendship between nations. Consequently, at least 50% of the crews must be young people aged 15 to 25. Any single-hull sailing vessel with a waterline length of more than 9.14m, which meets the established safety requirements of the international sailing training association Sail Training International (STI), can take part in the regatta.
