1kr blue newspaper tax stamp, 1868
1kr blue newspaper tax stamp is one of the most desirable stamps of Hungary. The newspaper tax stamps were used to collect a fiscal tax rather than pay postage. These items were only issued for the Military Border District, thus there are almost no unused examples. It is considered that only 10-12 examples of 1kr blue newspaper tax stamp exist today. Almost all of these specimens are in used and faulty condition. One of the finest examples of 1kr blue newspaper tax stamp featuring original gum, large balanced margins all around, deep rich shade was sold at Siegel auction that took place in June, 2016. The example of this item in a very fine condition was offered by David Feldman for $6,796 at its sale that took place in May, 2010. This is a very mysterious stamp, which is well discussed and disputed by experts over the decades (like the two other values of this newspaper tax stamp issued for the Hungarian Military Border). It rarely appears on the philatelic market.

The Chain Bridge (“Lanchid”) souvenir sheet, 1949
The Chain Bridge (“Lanchid”) souvenir sheet was issued to commemorate the building of the Chain Bridge and the 100th anniversary of its opening. It is among Hungary’s postwar issues depicting Budapest’s famous Chain Bridge, the first permanent crossing over the Danube in that city. This souvenir sheet is one of the most expensive ever issued by Hungary. The stamp in the center illustrates the “Symbol of Labor”. Spink offered this scarce imperforate variety at its sale of the Krajcsovics collection that took place in June, 2017. It went to a new home for $6,713.

20f green & black postage due center inverted, 1908
This inverted-center 20-filler postage due stamp of 1908-09 is a great Hungarian rarity. Only a small number of this error is known. The philatelic records indicate one mint example from the Ferrary collection, two used specimens from Szeged , another copy used in Zengg and a sample on cover from Zengg. Even this humble postage due error tells an historical tale. The town of Zengg is now Senj, Croatia — another result of Hungary’s ever-shifting borders. Postmarked in 1910 in Zengg, the error was offered at Spink’s sale that took place in June, 2017. An attractive used example of this postage due error featuring fresh colors and nice impressions, accompanied with 1991 Otto Schaffling certificate, was sold for $6,500.

70f brown on greenish error stamp, 1938
70f brown on greenish is one of only few examples of 70-filler stamp that shows the Crown of St. Stephen (975-1038), Hungary’s first monarch. This crown became one of the most powerful symbols of Hungarian nationhood. Only 100 specimens of this stamp were printed, and only 15 or so unused examples stated to exist. These items were not issued without the overprint, and the examples that miss it are considered to be very scarce error stamps. A very fine sample of 70-filler stamp, tied to a piece of an envelope by a neat 1939 circular datestamp from the town of Nagymanya, was sold for $4,844 at Spink auction that took place in June, 2017.

10kr black and green revenue stamp, 1868
1868 10kr black and green revenue , center inverted is a magnificent stamp that can adorn even the most sophisticated stamp collections. This unique philatelic item appeared at Spink auction that took place in June, 2009. Accompanied by a 1966 letter from the well-respected dealer Robert Lyman, in which he states "....the stamp is from the revenue collection of Dr. Carl Schmidt, who was secretary to Count Ferrari, winner of the Crawford and Lindenburg medals, authority on German local stamps” was sold for $3,250. Dr. Schmidt considered this stamp to be the prized piece in his general revenue collection.

3fo soccer unissued corner block, 1954

As the Hungarian team prepared for the FIFA World Cup finals in Switzerland in 1954, the Hungarian post office prepared a commemorative airmail stamp to mark the expected victory. But these special items remained unissued as the team lost in the finals. The 3fo green-and-brown stamps, showing a map of the world, national flag and an old-fashioned soccer ball, were scrapped. A unique and quite possibly the only known imperforate corner block of these stamps was offered by Spink in June, 2017. It was sold for $2,400.

60f Soviet probe Luna 2 stamp, 1959
60f Soviet probe Luna 2 with a scarce variety "missing colour red" is one of the most interesting items of Hungarian philately. It was issued after the stamp featuring Luna 1 heading for the Moon. Lunas 1 and 2 were identical, so the Luna 1 stamp needed to be modified only slightly to commemorate the success of Luna 2. It was overprinted with the exact time of lunar impact. The example of this great philatelic item in perfect condition, mint, never hinged, which counts to the large rarities Hungary, was sold by Gert Müller GmbH & Co. KG in November, 2018. There are only few copies of this special variety have become known. The stamp fetched $2,265 at this sale.
