Postage stamps of Monaco were first issued in 1885, however, the postal history of this country dates back to the middle of the 19th Century. The stamp issues of Monaco have had a major presence in stamp collecting for most of the last century. Moreover, besides being rulers, the 20th century princes of Monaco had stamp collecting as their hobby. Stamps of this country are quite popular, as the majority of them are reasonably inexpensive, and at the same time they allure collectors with their extensive variety of themes, designs etc. Nineteenth century Monaco issues have many paper, separation, printing, and color varieties, and a study of the postal history of this principality can also include classical stamps of Sardinia and France, as well as those of Monaco.

5fr+5fr Princess Charlotte's marriage stamp, 1920
Monaco, 1920, 5fr+5fr Princess Charlotte's marriage is one of the rarest stamps of Monaco, of which only 1,050 specimens were issued. The stamp was released to celebrate Princess Charlotte's marriage. She was the daughter of Louis II, Prince of Monaco, and the mother of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco. From 1922 until 1944, she was the Hereditary Princess of Monaco, heir presumptive to the throne. Princess Charlotte of Monaco, Duchess of Valentinois married the French Count Pierre de Polignac on 19 March 1920.They had two children. However the couple separated due to Pierre’s homosexuality. An extraordinary example 5fr+5fr Princess Charlotte's Marriage stamp in exceptionally fresh condition was offered by Daniel F. Kelleher Auctions in February, 2016. This rarity managed to fetch $5,015.

5fr rose on green stamp, 1885
5fr rose on green stamp is one of the ten portrait definitive stamps of Monaco issued during 1885. They are all typographed on unwatermarked paper, and they are perforated 14 x 13 1/2. The stamp features the right-facing portrait of Prince Charles III. He ruled Monaco from 1856 to 1889. The prince is best known as the founder of the famous casino in Monte Carlo quarter of the principality, which is named after him. A well-centered example of 5fr rose on green stamp, featuring bright color, was offered by Robert A Siegel in April, 2017. This very fine and handsome used stamp, which is difficult to find in such a good quality, was sold for $1,600.

1fr Princess Grace stamp, issued in 1957, is one of the most interesting Monaco stamps. It features the left-facing portrait of Princess Grace of Monaco, who was an American actress of films and television, known for her stately beauty and reserve. Kelly retired from acting at the age of 26 to marry Rainier, and began her duties as Princess of Monaco. She became Princess of in April 1956, when she became the wife of the ruler of Monaco. A block of four 1fr Princess Grace stamps was offered by Cherrystone in June, 2010. The lot, representing fresh black colour, in a very fine condition managed to fetch $1,400.

2,00fr "Albert" Durer error stamp, 1972
2,00fr "Albert" Durer error stamp is one of the most famous error stamps of Monaco. Albrecht Durer is the most famous artist of Reformation Germany, widely known for his paintings, drawings, prints, and theoretical writings on art, all of which had a profound influence on 16th-century artists in his own country and in the Lowlands. The original printing 2,00fr "Albert" Durer error stamp mistakenly had the first name as Albert instead of Albrecht. The error was discovered and corrected before the stamps were placed on sale, therefore only a small number of these philatelic items exist today. A never hinged, very fine example of this rarity fetched $1,200 at Schuyler Rumsey auction in April, 2011.

1000fr great cormorant stamp, 1855
1000fr great cormorant stamp is one of the brightest Monaco airmail stamps. The original 1955 issue features perf 11, which is considered as very rare. In 1957 the stamp with the far more common perf 13 was released. The stamp shows a great cormorant, known as the great black cormorant across the Northern Hemisphere. It is a widespread member of the cormorant family of seabirds. It breeds in much of the Old World and the Atlantic coast of North America. A block of four 1000fr great cormorant stamps was offered at Cherrystone auction that took place in June, 2010. The lot in a very fine condition was sold for $700.

25fr 75th anniversary of UPU essay, 1949
25fr 75th anniversary of UPU essay was introduced by Monaco Post to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, which effectively came into being on 9 October 1874. The primary aim of this organization is to improve postal service throughout the world and to ensure international collaboration in this area. All postal administrations were requested to issue special postal stamps to commemorate 75th Anniversary of UPU. It resulted in the first UN related omnibus issue. 25fr 75th anniversary of UPU essay has a beautiful design that features our planet, a dove and an inscription “Union Postale Universelle”. This bright philatelic item appeared at Corinphila auction in April, 2012. The lot was sold for $687.

25th anniversary of the reign of Prince Louis II souvenir sheet, 1947
25th Anniversary of the Reign of Prince Louis II souvenir sheet is a beautiful philatelic item introduced by Monaco Post to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Prince Louis II, who was Prince of Monaco from 1922 to 1949. He occupied the Monegasque throne during one of the most crucial periods in the country’s history. While his reign never achieved the grandeur of his father, Louis II left an indelible imprint on the tiny principality. 25th anniversary of the reign of Prince Louis II imperforated souvenir sheet printed on bluish paper in mint, extremely fine condition, was sold by Le Timbre Classique in February, 2019. The lot, featuring exceptionally fresh colors, fetched $675.

20fr Gardens of the Prince's Palace stamp, 1933-39
20fr Gardens of the Prince's Palace stamp is one of the most beautiful philatelic items from “Views of Monaco” series. It was issued by Monaco Post on January 17, 1933 as the high value in a definitive set of twenty-one stamps. The stamp was designed by French artist Jean-Gabriel Goulinat and engraved by Antonin Delzers. This beautiful item shows the scenery from the Gardens of the Prince's Palace, which is the official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco. The palace built in 1191 is a blend of architectural styles; its ancient origins are indicated by a lack of symmetry. 20fr Gardens of the Prince's Palace stamp was offered by Francois Feldman in March, 2019. The lot in a very fine condition was sold for $521.

20c on 10c light violet with double surcharge, 1918
20c on 10c light violet postage due with double surcharge is one of the greatest stamps of Monaco that contains an error. This special philatelic item with double surcharge instead of one was created in 1918. The stamp shows the left-facing portrait of Prince Albert I, who served as the Prince of Monaco from 10 September 1889 until his death. He devoted much of his life to oceanography. Alongside his expeditions, Albert I made reforms on political, economic and social levels, bestowing a constitution on the Principality in 1911. A lightly hinged, bright and fresh example of 20c on 10c light violet with double surcharge was sold for $450 in June, 2013.

1fr on 50c brown on orange with double surcharge is one of the most interesting postage due stamps introduced by Monaco Post. It contains inscription 'TAXE' and 'A PERCEVOIR'. Inspired by France’s exquisitely engraved issues of the mid-20th century, this beautiful stamp attracts collectors with its stunning design. The double surcharge adds to the rarity of this philatelic item. A fine example of 1fr on 50c brown on orange with double surcharge appeared at Siegel auction in June, 2013. The lot featuring lightly disturbed original gum, bright colors, and signed Champion, was sold for $400 at this sale.
