Poland had no stamps of its own until the end of World War I, as it was divided among Austria, Russia and Germany. The nascent government authorized post offices in various cities to overprint whatever stamps they had on hand with the words “Poczta Polska” (Polish Post) and some of the resulting overprints are very scarce. 10 kr blue overprinted in black issued in 1919 is one of such philatelic issues. This stamp is a major gem of Polish and World philately. Collectors estimate that only fifteen examples exist today that they are quite expensive. One of the specimens of 10 kr blue with black overprint (“superb, very well centered, with full original gum, lightly hinged”) was sold for $55,000 at Cherrystone auction that took place in October, 2009.

6h orange overprint inverted, 1919

6h orange was overprinted, as regular definitive stamps for Cracow, on January 17, 1919. The overprint contains POLSKA / POCZTA, with a small ornament in the middle. This stamp is denominated in Austrian Heller and is nowadays considered as one of the most impressive items of Polish philately. One of the copies of 6h orange with inverted overprint was auctioned by Cherrystone in October, 2009. The specimen in a superb condition featuring fresh color, with full original gum, never hinged, is surely the best known copy of this error. It managed to fetch an incredible sum of $50,000.

Za Lot Kop 10 stamp, 1860 is the first stamp of the Polish Kingdom (Congress Poland). The item has a design that is very similar to the contemporary Russian Imperial definitive issue, but the center of the item features an emblem of Polish coat of arms. These new stamps were issued without the approval of the Russian Imperial Postal Service; however they were allowed to be used on letter mail within the Congress Poland and to the Russian Empire. This was the only Polish postage stamp issued during the 19th Century.  One of the greatest specimens of this spectacular item with printing plate errors (damaged two lower tens and spot between oval and circumferential line in right lower part) was offered by Christoph Gärtner in August, 2018. It is the only copy in mint never hinged condition within this plate error. The lot managed to fetch $40,671 at after-auction-sale.

5pf on 2pf surcharge inverted, 1919

5pf on 2pf surcharge inverted stamps were re-valued on September 15, 1919 for provisional use in Gniezno. They are denominated in German Pfennig. There are many forgeries of these surcharges, but only certified examples should be purchased! The genuine 5pf on 2pf surcharge inverted stamp in a very fine condition, signed Gryzewski, Rachmanow, Schmutz, with some fingerprint impressions on gum and Mikulski certificate, was auctioned by Cherrystone in October, 2009. The lot was realized for a record price of $35,000.

1924 Eagle garland 25gr indigo error of color (instead of red brown) is one of the greatest error stamps issued by Poland Post. The mistake occurred during the printing process of a sheet of 40gr indigo; a plate of 25gr was erroneously inserted in the 35th position. The error was revealed immediately and corrected afterwards. But nevertheless some sheets with a printing mistake entered the circulation. 1924 25gr error, se-tenant pair with 40gr indigo was sold by Cherrystone auction house in October, 2014. With Mikulski certificate stating "unique and the most important piece for the Polish philately in XX Century", this exceptional philatelic item fetched $27,500. Monte Carlo Exposition that took place in 2002 included this stamp to its exhibition of the 100 greatest philatelic rarities of the world.

After the World War I Poland used German and Austrian stamps overprinted with “Poczta Polska”. During this period one of the most interesting Polish philatelic items appeared. This is 10k Deep Violet, Kracow issue, 1919. Only 440 copies of these bright stamps were issued making them very expensive. A fine example of 10k Deep Violet, Kracow stamp featuring intensely rich color, well-centered, was auctioned by Cherrystone at its auction that took place in March, 2008. This spectacular lot fetched an amazing price of $21,850.

Olympic Games 20g Boxer center inverted, 1956

The Games of the XIVth Olympiad provided Poland with the opportunity to participate in the event for the 7th time and served as an occasion for the Polish Post to issue its first Olympic series. Among the many designs received, those submitted by César Kaczmarczyk were selected. In such a way Olympic Games 20g Boxer stamp, 1956 appeared. However fourteen copies within this issue were printed upside down and they became one of the most desirable Polish philatelic items. Only few specimens of this very scarce variety reached in private ownership - a crown jewel of Olympic Games philately after 1900! An example of this modern rarity was sold for $21,000 at Cherrystone auction that took place in January 2009.

25h blue Krakow issue, 1919 is one of the brightest Poland semi-postal stamps. The item is overprinted with POLSKA / POCZTA and denominated in Austrian Heller.  This is a very high priced stamp that is sought after by collectors. It depicts Karl I who was the last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1916, during the First World War. 25h blue Krakow issue damaged CZT in Poczta was sold by Cherrystone in May, 2013. With this variety only 11 stamps were overprinted that is why they are thought as real philatelic gems. The auction house offered the finest known copy of this exceptional stamp, which was previously part of Grabowski collection. The item in a superb condition, with full original gum, never hinged managed to fetch $10,500.

5M red violet stamp, 1919

5M red violet is a definitive Polish stamp denominated in Marka that was printed on thin, laid paper. A block of four 5M red violet stamps cancelled with "Poczta Polska Konstantynopol" in a very fine condition was offered by Cherrystone in October, 2008. This is a very rare set from the first issue, presented as gift to Ignacy Paderewski, the first President of the newly resurgent Polish Republic and world renowned pianist. Considered by collectors as a great rarity from the Polish Levant this bright philatelic item fetched $5,000.

1919 1K ultramarine postage due with Kracow overprint is one of the rarest Polish philatelic gems as only 80 were printed. A premium mint example of this postage due rarity, possessing stunning color that is incredibly deep and proof like, was offered by Spink auction house in September, 2008. In a superb condition this lot is without doubt among the finest of the mere 80 examples that were issued. Signed several times and accompanied by a 1992 Kronenberg certificate, 1919 1K Ultramarine postage due overprint fetched $4,500.
