Easter 2018 celebrated by Croatia Post… A special festive stamp released!
Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holiday seasons across the world and Croatia Post has released a special festive stamp to mark this long-awaited feast. The motif of the issue is “Descent from the Cross” (a station on the Way of the Cross) – a beautiful sculpture by Mile Skračić. This special piece of art is located in Church of Immaculate Conception of Mary that is located in Dubrave, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the Church of Immaculate Conception of Mary located in Dubrave by Brčko, Mile Skračić, a painter from Split, created what is possibly his best work, fourteen stations on the Way of the Cross. The background on all of them, including this “Descent from the Cross” – used by Croatian Post to commemorate this year's Easter - is the golden glow of a large sun.
The Descent was one of the first of a series of religious images which Mestrovic continued to carve throughout the war years. These works, mostly carved in wood relief, included the imposing Crucifix of 1919, as well as reliefs of The Deposition. Ivan Meštrović thus still remains the most wanted artist (especially among sculptors) from the eastern part of Europe, and the praise of his works of art is more and more recognized.
