A Free Press: 200 Years Australia new stamp 2024
Today, people believe that the media operates freely, without any interference. It was not the case in Australia for a certain period of time. The country used to suffer from strict censorship because most newspapers favored government narratives and silenced the opposition.

In 1824, Andrew Bent took a stand against it by launching the first uncensored newspaper, "The Hobart Town Gazette." Despite facing punishments, such as being removed from his position and imprisoned for speaking out against the government, Bent persisted in publishing critical content.

"The Australian" emerged the same year. It promoted progressive ideas and received the support of government officials. These newspapers made a significant contribution to the development of the independent press in Australia.
